Jordan Martins, Jaguar Headband Twins April 2 - 30, 2011
Comfort Station is excited to present Jaguar Headband Twins, a solo exhibition of new work by Logan Square- based artist, Jordan Martins. Jaguar Headband Twins is a group of stunningly intricate collage on panel that revolve around the artists’ seemingly insatiable capacity for visual play. Appropriating imagery from old cookbooks, comics, encyclopedias and other discarded texts, Martins describes the series as contemporary Baroque “in the way it bonds fragments together into a continuous form.”
These multi-media collages are not only painstakingly arranged on a two-dimensional level to create play of color, texture and form, but also in a disarmingly sculptural third dimension. Each of the eight pieces is covered with multiple layers of clear resin, in which there is suspended another layer of collage. From across the room these pieces are beautiful abstract compositions, and as approached, to the point one’s nose is nearly pressed against the surface, the subtleties continue to reward your attention. These works have such encased energy, they almost buzz.
The show also also boasts of live music programming curated by Mr. Martins, who runs the jazz night at local watering hole/venue/gallery/record label, The Whistler. The music scheduled will represent a smattering of jazz, ambient, song writers, improvisers and composers. Below is the schedule, all music will be performed on site at Comfort Station.
